Wilpattu National Park Birds•04 Oct 2026•By Travel Buddy Sri Lanka - Wilpattu Safari
Spotting a Crested Serpent Eagle is always a special moment when visiting Wilpattu National Park. These impressive birds can be seen throughout the year and are often found resting on low branches, which makes them fairly easy to observe and gives visitors a great chance to admire them up close.
What Does It Look Like?
The Crested Serpent Eagle is mostly dark brown, with small white spots across its feathers that stand out nicely in the photos. Its yellow beak and bright yellow eyes are just as noticeable. Up close, that strong, focused look in its eyes is one of the things that makes this bird so memorable.
What Does It Eat?
As its name suggests, the Crested Serpent Eagle has a particular taste for reptiles, especially snakes. It also hunts small mammals and fish, which shows just how adaptable and capable this bird is when it comes to finding food.
A Great Bird for Photographers
Crested Serpent Eagles are often quite comfortable around people. They can spend a long time perched quietly on a low branch, giving you the chance to watch them from fairly close by. It is one of the reasons they are such a pleasure to spot in the wild and a favourite among photographers..
